🎯 The Role
As a Staff Frontend Engineer on the Core DevOps team, you will provide top-tier technical leadership across engineering groups. You will take ownership of GitLab's repository management experiences, spanning Git CLI interactions to web-based code navigation. Your primary charter is elevating frontend system health: transforming monolithic structures into decoupled, modular systems, establishing performance budgets, and creating guardrails for AI-assisted workflows.

💼 What You'll Do
- Lead architectural strategy and technical delivery for major frontend initiatives across Core DevOps.
- Drive governance for shared component platforms, design systems, and frontend contracts.
- Spearhead the migration of legacy monolith frontend code into modular, isolated micro-interfaces.
- Define and enforce rigorous standards for testability, web performance, accessibility (WCAG), and zero-downtime rollbacks.
- Author clear architectural proposals and technical decision records, collaborating closely with staff engineers and engineering managers.
- Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, establishing evaluation frameworks for agentic and AI-assisted tooling.
✅ What You'll Need
- Demonstrated track record of technical leadership across multiple engineering teams or substantial product domains.
- Deep mastery of modern frontend architecture, state synchronization, and complex web applications.
- Hands-on history governing design systems, component libraries, or shared platform foundations.
- Direct production experience implementing modular frontend patterns (Web Components, package boundaries, or runtime composition).
- Strong capacity to create technical alignment through articulate written documentation and RFCs.

- Experience across Vue, React, Angular, and strict TypeScript.
- Familiarity with GitLab's codebase, GraphQL APIs, or PostgreSQL and Redis integration.
