🎯 The Role

Within GitHub's Core UX organization, the Front End Web UI Platform team is responsible for the foundational architecture, shared tooling, and engineering standards behind GitHub.com. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will set technical direction for the web UI platform, raising the ceiling on performance, accessibility, availability, and UI consistency. This is a high-leverage systems engineering role focused on creating durable "paved paths" and leading multi-team migrations across an actively evolving codebase.

💼 What You'll Do

• Direct the long-term technical vision for GitHub's web UI platform while remaining actively hands-on in implementation.
• Sequence and drive large-scale frontend migrations that modernize critical UI infrastructure with zero disruption to shipping teams.
• Define reusable patterns, component guidelines, and tooling that lower cognitive overhead for product engineering teams.
• Produce comprehensive design docs, articulate engineering tradeoffs, and foster consensus with engineering, design, and product leaders.
• Diagnose and systematically improve interaction latency, rendering efficiency, and network payload budgets.
• Provide hands-on mentorship, lead technical reviews, and champion engineering excellence across the organization.

✅ What You'll Need

• 8+ years of software engineering experience delivering and maintaining complex, production-grade applications.
• Deep mastery of modern web technologies, specifically React or Angular framework internals and server-side rendering.
• Proven background in architecting large-scale frontend systems and executing multi-team migrations.
• Thorough understanding of web platform fundamentals, accessibility guidelines, and browser performance bottlenecks.
• Experience establishing shared design systems, component libraries, or paved-path developer tools.
• Strong communication skills with an ability to clearly explain complex architectural strategies to diverse stakeholders.

• Prior contributions to high-traffic developer tools, open-source web ecosystems, or public component libraries.
• Direct experience leading web accessibility transformations at enterprise scale.
