The Open Home Foundation is a Swiss-based non-profit dedicated to championing privacy, choice, and sustainability in the smart home space. They steward some of the most influential open-source projects in home automation, including Home Assistant — the largest open-source project by contributor count. Their ecosystem spans open hardware tools like ESPHome, open connectivity standards (Matter, Z-Wave JS, ZigPy), and open voice technologies (Piper, Rhasspy).

🎯 The Role

This is a full-time remote position for a Frontend Engineer based in Europe, joining the Home Assistant core team. You won't be building marketing sites — Home Assistant is a sophisticated, real-time progressive web application that manages hundreds of live data and control points simultaneously. Think dynamic dashboards, bidirectional WebSocket communication, and installable cross-platform experiences used by millions. You'll work on complex, stateful UI challenges in a community-driven open-source environment.

💼 What You'll Do

• Conduct thorough code reviews for team and community pull requests, ensuring consistently high standards
• Partner with engineering, design, and product to ship new PWA features driven by community feedback and product specs
• Elevate the frontend codebase through architecture improvements, scalability enhancements, and maintainability upgrades
• Engage directly with the Home Assistant community — triaging user-reported bugs and preparing contributor-friendly tasks

✅ What You'll Need

• 3+ years of hands-on TypeScript development
• Proven experience building and optimizing progressive web applications
• Working knowledge of modern frontend frameworks (Lit, React, Angular, or Vue)
• Solid grasp of Web Components fundamentals — custom elements, shadow DOM, and DOM APIs
• Independence, strong problem-solving instincts, and meticulous attention to detail
• Deep proficiency with Git and GitHub collaboration workflows
• Professional English fluency (written and verbal)
• Must be based in Europe with work eligibility

• Prior contributions to Home Assistant (cards, custom UI components) or other open-source projects
• Active Home Assistant user or genuine interest in smart home technology
• Eye for delightful UX and micro-interactions
• Affinity for open-source philosophy and community-driven development

• Knowledge of web accessibility standards
• Familiarity with testing frameworks (Vitest, Jest, Cypress)

💰 Compensation (75th percentile, local market rates)
